Why the trip starts in Ubud

Ubud is the island’s cultural centre, set among jungle and rice fields. Starting here means the long drive is done on day one.

The first afternoon includes a purification ceremony at a spring, led by a local priest, and a two-hour workshop in Balinese silverwork or batik.

There is time to slow down too: morning yoga at the resort, lunch at Sari Organik after a walk through the rice fields, and the Neka Art Museum.
