Why the shoulder months work

April, May and September give you dry-season weather with fewer people. The island is still green after the rains, and ceremonies become more frequent.

Sea visibility around Nusa Penida and Candidasa often passes 20–25 metres in April and May. Restaurant tables and clifftop villas are easier to book than in July.

Delhi has a non-stop flight of about 7 hours 45 minutes, so a short shoulder-season trip is easy to fit in.

Travelling in June, July or August

This is the high season: steady sun, low humidity and often under 50 mm of rain in a month. It is the best time for surfing, diving and beach clubs.

It is also the most expensive. Some premium villas charge $1,500–2,000 a night, and flights from India cost the most.

  • Book villas and popular restaurants months in advance
  • Expect busier roads during religious festivals
  • Christmas and New Year are also busy and expensive

Which months suit your trip

Diving and snorkelling

June to August has the clearest water, including Manta Point and the Liberty wreck at Tulamben. April and May are close behind.

Surf and water sports

June to August, when steady trade winds suit surfing and kiteboarding off Seminyak and Canggu.

Wellness and culture

November to March: spa days, cooking classes and quieter temples, with villa rates 30–50% below peak.

What the wet season is like

From November the rain comes in heavy bursts, usually in the afternoon. Mornings and evenings are often clear.

Rice terraces are at their greenest and waterfalls are at full flow. The east coast around Candidasa and Amed often stays good for diving while the west coast gets choppier.

Outside the Christmas and New Year weeks, flights from India can be competitive and many resorts offer longer-stay discounts.
